ज्याच्या आधारावरती हिंदूंच्या शुद्ध जातीला वर सांगितलेले विद्वान् नावें ठेवीत होते व सबगोलंकार करण्यास उत्तेजन देत होते, तो सिद्धान्त flimsy self-contradictory व कवडीमोल आहे, असें सर रिस्ले म्हणतात. हे सर रिस्ले मानववंशशास्त्राचे व जातिज्ञानाचे मोठे ज्ञाते आहेत, असें हिंदुस्थानसरकार समजतें. त्या सरकारच्या आज्ञेवरून प्रसिद्ध केलेल्या ग्रंथांत रजपुतांचे शाकवंशीयत्व ज्याअर्थी अशास्त्र व असत्य ठरविलेलें आहे, त्याअर्थी तें तसें मानणें उच्छिष्ट विचार व सिद्धान्त यांवर स्वजनांच्या उरावर पाय देऊन उपजीविका करणा-या लोकांना अत्यंत अपरिहार्य आहे. बाकी धर्मनिष्ठ जे आहेत त्यांना शाकवंशजत्वाची व लंबशिरस्कत्वाची अशा दोन्हीही उपपत्त्या एकाच किंमतीच्या वाटतात. रजपूत वंशानें हिंदु आहेत, क्षत्रिय आहेत, व आर्य आहेत, हा सिद्धान्त, कितीही पोषक किंवा मारक अशा पाचकळ उपपत्या निघाल्या तत्रापि, धर्मनिष्ठांना त्रिकालाबाधित वाटत राहील, ह्यांत संशय नाहीं.

८ आतां दुस-या एका कवडीमोल दुष्ट ग्रहाचा उल्लेख करतों. तो वरच्याच्या सारखा जुना नाहीं; अगदीं अलीकडला कोराकरकरीत आहे. हा कालपर्यंत रजपूत Scythians आहेत, अशी कंडी पिकवून, अनेक अर्धवट लोकांना यानें माकडचेष्टा करावयास लावल्या. आतां रजपुतांवरची संक्रांत उठून मराठ्यांवर ती बसूं पहात आहे, नव्हे साक्षात् बसलीच आहे. आतां असें मत निघालें आहे कीं, महाराष्ट्रांतील मराठे लोक वंशानें शाक म्हणजे Scythian आहेत. सर रिस्ले म्हणतात -

Is it not conceivable that the Scythians, who first occupied the great grazing country of the Western Punjab, and then, pressed upon by later invaders and finding their progress eastwards blocked by the Indo-Aryans, turned towards the south, mingled with the Dravidian population, and became the ancestors of the Marathas? The physical type of the people of this region accords well with this theory, while the arguments derived from language and religion do not seem to conflict with it. For, after entering India, the Scythians readily adopted an Aryan language, written in the Kharosthi character, and accepted Buddhism as their religion. Their Prakrit speech would have developed into Marathi, while their Buddhistic doctrines would have been absorbed in that fusion of magic and metaphysics which has resulted in popular Hinduism. On this view the wide-raging forays of the Marathas their guerilla methods of warfare, their unscrupulous dealings with friend and foe, their genius for intrigue and their consequent failure to build up an enduring dominion, might well be regarded as inherited from their Scythian ancestors.
