६. ग्रांट डफ् च्या बखरींतल्या तारखा, प्रसंग व तपशील प्रस्तुत खंडांतील मित्याशीं, प्रसंगांशीं व तपशिलांशीं ताडून पाहिला असतां स्थलोस्थलीं चुकीचा व विपरीत दिसेल, हें महाराष्ट्रांतील लोकांस तरी सांगण्याचे आता कारण उरलें नाहीं. रा. खरे, रा. पारसनीस व मी ह्यांनीं ही बाब आजपर्यंत इतक्या वेळा सांगितली आहे व स्वजनांनीं इतक्या वेळा ऐकिली आहे कीं तिचा पुनरुच्चार करणें ह्यापुढें केवळ कंटाळवाणे होणार आहे. ग्रांट डफ् ला ह्या देशांत आतां कोणी प्रमाण मानीत नाहींत. इंग्लिश लोक मात्र त्याला अद्याप प्रमाण म्हणून समजतात. परंतु, तो निव्वळ अज्ञानाचा प्रकार होय. निदान ह्या एका बाबींत तरी इंग्रजांच्या आपण पुढें आहोंत, ही समाधानाची गोष्ट आहे.

७. तारखा, प्रसंग व तपशील ह्यासंबंधानें ग्रांट डफ् नें ज्या चुका केल्या व जे विपरीत ग्रह उत्पन्न केले, त्याहून निराळ्या त-हेच्या विपरीत ग्रहांचा बीमोड करण्याचा काळ आतां आला आहे. हे विपरीत ग्रह जाणूनबुजून केलेले असोत किंवा अज्ञानतः केलेले असोत, त्यांमुळे पुष्कळ जाणतेसवरते लोक देखील वारंवार फसतात; मग अजाण लोक फसले तर त्यांत कांहीं नवल नाहीं. अशा एक दोन दुष्ट ग्रहांचा स्पष्टीकरणार्थ येथें उल्लेख करतों. रजपूत व जाट लोकांतील कांहीं किंवा सर्व कुळ्या अहिंदु जे शक व तुरुष्क लोक ते हिंदु बनून त्यांच्यापासून झाल्या, असा विपरीत सिद्धांत गेलीं पन्नासपाऊणशें वर्षे बहुतेक सर्व इंग्रज व युरोपियन लोक ठोकून देत. इंग्रज व युरोपियन लोक पडले चौकसपणाने सशास्त्र विवेचन करणारे, तेव्हां, त्यांचे विपरीत दिसणारेहि सिद्धांत प्रमाणवत् मानून, आपल्या इकडील कित्येक विद्वन्मन्य हवे तसे बरळावयाला लागले. हे विद्वन्मन्य आपल्या साध्याभोळ्या परंतु कुलधर्मनिष्ठ स्वजनांना असा उद्धट सवाल करू लागलें कीं, 'शहाणे हो! पूर्वी अहिंदु जे शक लोक ते हिंदु बनून जातिवंत रजपूत म्हणजे क्षत्रिय समजले जात व त्यांचे पुरोहितत्व सोंवळ्यांतलें सोवळे जें कोणी ब्राह्मण असत के करीत, अशी सशास्त्र वस्तुस्थिति आहे; तेव्हां शुद्धजातित्वाच्या गप्पा कशाला मारतां?' विद्वन्मन्यांचे हे उच्छिष्ट व निरर्गल प्रलाप धर्मनिष्ठांना कवडीमोल भासत, हें सांगावयाला नकोच. परंतु, ते कवडीमोल आहेत अशी खात्री ह्या विद्वन्मन्य लोकांची कशी व्हावी? कोण्या युरोपियन शास्त्रज्ञानें तसें सांगितल्याशिवाय त्यांच्या मूर्ख मतांचा कवडीमोलपणा त्यांना कधीं पटावयाचाच नाहीं. हें जाणून एका इंग्रज मानववंशशास्त्रज्ञाचें रजपूतवंशासंबंधानें शास्त्रविचारान्तीं आतां काय मत झालेलें आहे तें देतों. तो म्हणतो -

Of the Scythian people themselves all traces seem to have vanished, and the student who inquires what has become of them finds nothing more tangible than the modern conjecture that they are represented by the Jats and Rajputs. But the grounds for this opinion are of the flimsiest description, and consist mainly of the questionable assumption that the people who are called Jats or Jats at the present day must have something to do with the people who were known to Herodotus as Getae. Now apart from the fact that resemblances of names are often misleading-witness the Roman identification of these very Getae with the Goths- we have good historical reasons for believing that the Scythian invaders of India came from a region occupied exclusively by broad-headed races and must themselves have belonged to the type. It seems, therefore, unlikely that their descendents should be found among tribes who are essentially of the long-headed type. Still less probable is it that waves of foreign conquerors, entering India at a date when the Indo-Aryans had long been absorbed by them so completely as to take rank among their most typical representatives, while the form of their heads, the most persistent of racial distinctions, was transformed from the extreme of one type to the extreme of another without leaving any trace of transitional forms in the process. Such are the contradictions which beset the attempt to indentify the Scythian with the Jats and Rajputs.
